Cook County Commissioner Sean Morrison Responds to Governor J.B. Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson Joint Press Conference

September 2, 2025
Interview

Cook County, IL — Today, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson held a joint press conference opposing President Trump’s reported plans to send federal forces, including National Guard personnel and immigration agents, to Chicago. They framed these actions as unwarranted, politically motivated, and potentially unlawful intrusions on local autonomy. They urged communities to resist federal intervention and demanded coordination, asserting that “crime prevention is not his true agenda” and warning of disruptions to civil life and democratic norms.

As a concerned citizen, I find this stance not only dangerous but deeply irresponsible. At a time when many families in Chicago are experiencing tangible threats, hundreds of shootings, home invasions, robberies, and escalating violence, calling for resistance against federal authorities contributes to fear, anger, and anxiety rather than safety. While local governance is crucial, standing against cooperation with federal resources, military police, especially those aimed at arresting criminal migrants or curbing mass shootings, strikes me as reckless, particularly from Democrats who claim to support public safety.

Most citizens, real parents, workers, families, support the rule of law and want safe communities. This should not be controversial. Asking for calm, empathy, and operational collaboration with federal law enforcement is reasonable and responsible. Instead, what we witnessed today feels like a political maneuver designed to stoke emotions and call for chaos rather than protect communities.

I urge our elected officials, regardless of party, to stop weaponizing rhetoric. Families in Chicago deserve leaders who build bridges, not barricades. We want safety, not spin. We want solutions that put people first, not politics. That is what every Chicago family, every parent, every citizen hopes for, and deserves.

Statement: Real Solutions Needed to Tackle Violent Crime in Chicago

August 25, 2025

Over the last several days, Chicago Democrats have been in full outrage mode over what President Trump says he intends to do. Yet not even one of them has offered a clear, logical reason why his proposals are wrong. Their lone argument seems to be: “If Trump says it, we must oppose it.” That’s not leadership, that’s reflexive partisanship, and it leaves everyday citizens paying the price.

Take crime as the most glaring example. President Trump points out what everyone can see: shootings, carjackings, and violent robberies are still plaguing Chicago communities. Even the most loyal Democratic voters know this problem is real. Citizens and visitors alike see it with their own eyes. We have a broken state and a broken city. Businesses are shuttered, retail corridors sit 40+% vacant, and residents continue to leave in record numbers. These are undeniable facts that no amount of political spin can erase.

Here’s the hypocrisy: not one elected official has said, “Trump is wrong, the problem doesn’t exist.” They can’t, because the problem is undeniable. Instead, Mayor Johnson, Governor Pritzker, and their allies dismiss the concerns with buzzwords and attacks, hoping their base won’t notice the lack of real solutions.

If Democrats truly believe President Trump is wrong, then prove it. Offer real solutions instead of slogans and platitudes. Show our citizens and businesses that you’re willing to confront reality, because ignoring it has already broken our city and our state.

Commissioner Sean Morrison Statement on Pace Board Appointment Vote

July 2, 2025
Board Room

Cook County, IL — On July 1, 2025, the Cook County Board’s Suburban Transportation Committee took the unprecedented step of disregarding long-established precedent by overriding the recommendation I submitted for the Pace Board appointment representing Cook County’s Southwest Suburban region. Nearly 80% of this region lies within the 17th District, which I am honored to represent. Pace bus public transportation services offer transit options for the residents of 274 municipalities in Cook, Will, DuPage, Kane, Lake and McHenry counties. Pace serves approximately 127,000 daily riders.

For decades, this Board has respected the tradition that the commissioner whose district comprises a majority of the region has the deference to select the nominee from their district’s community. That practice was ignored on Tuesday for the first time, and the reason is painfully clear: political pressure and backroom interests carried more weight than merit and community representation.

I had proudly recommended Tinley Park Mayor Michael Glotz — a well-respected, reform-minded executive who brings leadership, transparency, and a results-oriented approach to local government. His qualifications are beyond reproach, and his appointment would have brought a fresh and accountable perspective to the Pace Board.

Instead, sadly, a majority of my colleagues on the committee voted to reappoint Orland Hills Mayor Kyle Hastings, a longtime political figure with deep ties to the status quo. In doing so, they bowed to the bullying special interest pressure and rejected a better-qualified reform candidate.

What makes Tuesday’s decision even more troubling is that Mayor Hastings himself invoked the support of his son, State Senator Michael Hastings, as a credential during the appointment process, openly stating that the Senator supports him and that they work together on issues in Springfield. In doing so, Mayor Hastings made the connection between their roles a matter of public relevance.

That context cannot be ignored. Senator Michael Hastings has been accused of serious misconduct, including multiple allegations of domestic violence, using our taxpayer dollars to pay for his lawsuits for sexual harassment and racial discrimination by his former staffers, and a well-documented pattern of screaming at, bullying and intimidation toward colleagues and lobbyists. These matters have cost Illinois taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars in settlements and cast a dark cloud over his public service. He was removed from committees and rebuked by Senate Leader Don Harmon, and Governor JB Pritzker called for his resignation.

While Kyle Hastings is not legally responsible for his son’s conduct, he deliberately tied his own credibility to Senator Hastings by using him as an endorsement. That decision invites a fair examination of the kind of political machinery at work behind Tuesday’s vote and raises serious concerns about the motivation behind his reappointment.

This was not a vote about good governance or who best represents the Southwest Suburbs. It was a calculated, politically motivated betrayal of a transparent and trusted process. Cook County residents deserve better than this. We must restore integrity to our appointments. Our transportation leadership should be chosen based on merit, transparent public trust, and service to the people, not the continuation of insider deals and political lineage.

WORTH, IL - Commissioner Morrison was honored to join Garden Center Services on Friday, May 30th for their groundbreaking ceremony for their Garden Apartments Multi Family Residences in the village of Worth. "I'm pleased to support their efforts to bring quality housing for the developmentally disabled members of our community right here in suburban Cook County and the 17th District," stated Commissioner Morrison.
Garden Center Services' mission is advancing lives of connection, contribution, and meaning for persons with developmental disabilities and the individuals that support them. Garden Center Services was established in 1956 as a grassroots effort to support children with developmental disabilities and their families. What started as an organization run entirely from a space above the garage at Reavis High School has blossomed into a multi-program agency that has a reputation for providing outstanding services to adults with disabilities.

COMMISSIONER SEAN MORRISON STATEMENT ON THE FRIDAY NIGHT CHAOS IN DOWNTOWN CHICAGO

March 30, 2025

The chaos in downtown Chicago on Friday night is yet another glaring example of what happens when radical leftist policies replace law and order with "social justice" experiments. For over eight years, progressive Democrats have prioritized criminals over law-abiding citizens, dismantling policing, eliminating consequences for bad behavior, and turning major cities into playgrounds for lawlessness.

These policies - soft-on-crime initiatives, cashless bail, defunding police, and a complete disregard for accountability - have failed at every level. Who suffers? Hardworking residents, business owners, and families who simply want to live in a safe and functional society. Instead, they are forced to watch their cities deteriorate into lawless free-for-alls, while elected officials refuse to acknowledge their failures.

When will sane leadership return? When will we elect adults who understand that public safety is non-negotiable? Until that happens, we can expect more of the same - more destruction, more violence, and more citizens left to fend for themselves while radical politicians make excuses.

Enough is enough!

Commissioner Sean M. Morrison - 17th District, Cook County
